Types of Tools
Over 300 to choose from!
Busch Precision manufactures and stocks a comprehensive line of tooling and inspection products to promote cost-effective production and quality control functions. Most Busch products are made from close-grained, domestically produced, stress-relieved castings, providing stability and wear resistance. They are precision ground to tenth tolerances and micro-finishes, with accuracies certified and traceable to NIST. These items can be drilled, tapped, and slotted for unique requirements. Custom tooling can be designed and developed for special applications. Worn tooling can be reconditioned at significant savings over replacement.
Most items are made in several sizes for handling convenience. Custom tooling can be designed and developed for special applications.
Sound but worn tooling can be re-machined, stress relieved, and precision ground and/or hand-scraped to restore precision accuracies at a significant savings over a replacement.
SURFACE FINISHES:
GROUND: A mirror smooth finish of 16 to 32 RMS* are produced on state-of-the-art precision surface grinders by skilled technicians. This precision ground finish is most commonly furnished. It is ideal for precision layout, gauging, and inspection work and facilitates the use of all types of calibration instruments. This finish provides accuracies in tenths of thousandths (.0001") in flatness, straightness, squareness, and parallelism. Super finishes of 8 RMS* or better can be provided at additional cost.
HAND SCRAPED: Hand scraping removes flakes of metal to provide a given number of spotting cavities per square inch, which is achieved by skilled artisans using both power and hand-manipulated scraping tools. This finish is used on tools used for spotting and checking ways of various machine tools and slides. It is normally furnished in two grades:
- COMMERCIAL - FED. SPEC. GRADE B providing 8-11 cavities per square inch with a 10 to 40% bearing.
- FINE - FED. SPEC. GRADE A providing 15-18 spotting cavities per square inch with a 20 to 40% bearing.
PLANER: This finish is produced by skilled technicians on planing equipment using high speeds and fine feeds with light cuts and well sharpened tools. It rates a 63 RMS* medium commercial finish. This finish is now used only on relatively large, awkward, or angular shaped items that are difficult to grind, and where thousandth accuracies are adequate.
*RMS: A roughness height rating. It is the abbreviation for ROOT MEAN SQUARE and is a measure of surface roughness in terms of the arithmetic average of the squares for the variances on a given surface. (FED. SPEC. MIL. STD. 10A)
